Electrical Safety Tips

Licences and Insurance

Electrical Safety Tip. Use a Licenced Electrician

Many home owners are tempted to give DIY electrical work a go. Licenced Sydney electricians do an apprenticeship providing on the job training as well as completing courses. Training and experience give electricians a great appreciation for the dangers related to electricity and home wiring. Saving a few dollars yet risking your life, a house full of expensive electrical equipment as well as your home is not worth it. Electrical and fire damage caused by unlicenced electricans may not be covered by your home and property insurance.

Energy Saving Tip. Install a draft stopper

A draft stopper installed on your ceiling exhaust fan will reduce heating bills. It will stop warm air leaving through the fan blades when the fan isn’t operational.

Energy Saving Tip. Clean heaters

Portable electric heaters are a fire hazard if not maintained. Keep heaters clean of dust. This makes them more efficient and less of a fire hazard. Naturally keep them in a position away from materials or objects that can burn.

Electrical safety Tip. Eliminate pests

Pests can be expensive. A rat trap is much cheaper than calling an electrician to repair electrical house wires chewed by pests.

Energy Saving Tip. Switch off for holidays

Switch off your electrical appliances at the power point when leaving home for holidays. This reduces energy wastage from being on standby. It also reduces the chance of electrical damage from electricity power surges

Safety Tip. Remove rewireable fuses

Get rid of your old rewireable fuses! They are dangerous! Many homes will still have these in their electricity fuse box. Safety switches are, as their name implies much safer

Electrical Safety Tip. Remove plugs carefully

When removing an electrical appliance plug from the wall never just pull on the electrical cord. It can break wiring connections even if it looks Ok from the outside.

Electrician safety Tip. Before you reset a safety switch

If you blow a fuse or trip a breaker by overloading a circuit make sure that all appliances on that circuit are turned off or unplugged before you replace the fuse or reset the breaker.

Electrical safety Tip. Never run electrical cords under rugs

It can conceal electrical wire damage plus cause the cord to overheat becoming a fire hazard.

Electrician safety Tip. Painting around powerpoints

When painting don’t remove powerpoints and light switches. It may expose live wires. It is safer to mask around them.

Electrican safety Tip. Drilling walls

Check for electrical wires before drilling into a wall, floors and ceiling. A drill coming in contact with a live wire can spell disaster.
